The Cats Got Out — Children’s Book Concept & Logo Design

The Cats Got Out is a children’s book concept designed to engage kids through vibrant visuals, interactive storytelling, and playful branding. The project includes a full-spread isometric illustration and a custom-designed logo, both created to work seamlessly in print, digital, and merchandise applications.

Illustration

Each spread is 8″ x 16″, covering two pages of an 8″ x 8″ children’s book, with layouts that also double as stand-alone posters. This featured scene — a colorful farm — is part of a series of environments where kids are invited to search for five mischievous cats who’ve escaped into different locations (e.g., a farm, arcade, skate park, etc.).

The illustration was built on an isometric grid, allowing characters, objects, and props to be easily repurposed across scenes. A bright primary color palette was chosen for its ability to catch the eye and encourage movement across the page — guiding the viewer naturally through the visual narrative.

Logo Design

The logo is designed to be bold, playful, and easily readable across sizes and platforms. Originally imagined as a chaotic jumble of all five cats toppling the type, the final concept refined the composition by limiting it to one or two featured cats interacting with the letters — preserving the fun while improving balance and clarity.

The typeface, Marvin Round, was selected for its bubbly, approachable style and high legibility at small sizes. The same primary color palette from the illustrations ties the branding together, creating a cohesive visual identity. The final logo is adaptable, scaling well and maintaining impact over both clean and busy backgrounds.
